What is Creative Doodling?

What is Creative Doodling?

Creative Doodling is a term I came up with to describe the art of using repeat patterns (doodles) to decorate a picture or pattern. There are many other terms to describe the same or similar activities such as Line Weaving, Repeat Pattern Art, Doodle Art, Neo Pop Realism and Zentangles.

Here is a basic example of how to do Creative Doodling:

When I first saw what people were doing with doodling and wanted to know more about it, I came across a video on You tube that impressed me enormously. The video by Sunni Brown: The Doodle Revolution discusses how important and useful doodling is in business, the class room and other areas where a lot of information is being processed. She discusses how doodling can increase your ability to focus on what is happening by 29%, and not detract from taking in information. It is not a useless activity but an important and useful one. The link to this video is HERE

If you like what Sunni has to say, here are some other links to what she does and believes

We have all been involved with producing simple doodles. Some of us with artistic skill even produce very intricate doodles, but most of us doodle whether we can draw or not.

Creative Doodling takes doodling to the next level and uses doodle patterns to decorate shapes or pictures.

You can choose to do it in colour or just with pen and paper.

There are millions of patterns in everything we look at. Many people have now started drawing patterns they see in nature and patterns created by man, and are using them in their creative doodles.

Simple Doodle Patterns

More intricate doodle patterns.

 Creative Doodling is for Everyone.

If you cannot draw you can:

 1. Draw simple Assorted shapes with Doodle patterns added.

2. Use stencils to draw your outlines.

3. Use cut out shapes to trace around and then colour and doodled them to decorate.

4. Trace an outline of a picture from one of your folk art books and decorate.

5. Copy a picture off the Internet and decorate.

This is how I decorated it.

If you can draw then you are only limited by your imagination.

For doodle pattern ideas, you can use the ones I have posted on this site, make up some of your own, or follow the link on the right side of this page to the site Tangle patterns that has hundred of patterns with instructions.

HAPPY DOODLING

    1. Hi Anita, I draw directly with ink. I rarely use a pencil unless I need to set up the under and over of a Celtic knot. I usually draw on A5 Watercolour paper. A5 is 148 x 210mm or 5.83 x 8.27 inches. Hope this is helpful.
